Though Raleigh, NC, has its share of cold days during the winter, it’s relatively temperate throughout the year – this is great news for homeowners who love spending time outdoors. With proper maintenance, Raleigh residents can enjoy their patios all year long, especially if they’re partially enclosed and outfitted with heat lamps. In order to get the most out of your patio, however, you must pay close attention to its flooring. Environmental factors like temperature fluctuations, moisture, sunlight, pests, and more can damage your patio flooring, diminishing your outdoor space’s appearance and integrity. Sealing your patio flooring with high-quality coatings is a great way to keep this feature safe during every season. That said, which type of patio floor coating is best suited for year-round lounging? Let’s discuss.

Best Patio Floor Coating For Year-Round Lounging

Exterior Epoxy

As we’ve gone over several times in previous blogs, epoxy concrete coatings are the most popular choices for various applications, including patio floors. These coatings have earned their standing, too, offering aesthetic appeal, high durability, moisture resistance, and longevity. If you plan on using your patio year-round, however, keep in mind that you need to keep up with regular floor maintenance. Epoxy may be durable but it’s not invincible. Even a small crack from abrasion or impact can open the door to serious problems that warrant resurfacing. Moreover, proper installation is key to getting the most protection and longest life out of your epoxy coatings.

Outdoor Concrete Stain

While epoxy floors offer a wide range of color options, they might not provide the look you desire. Concrete staining can yield an elegant, textured appearance that looks great year-round while also protecting your patio flooring from moisture, UV rays, and more. These concrete floor coatings aren’t as thick as epoxy, and high-end options tend to cost more than epoxy as well. Though finished off with a sealer, most stains don’t offer quite as much protection as epoxy coatings. Moreover, stain installation is more challenging when the underlying surface is in poor condition (epoxy offers more leeway in this regard). As such, staining isn’t the most cost-effective or protective patio coating option available, but it does offer a classy aesthetic.

Penntek Polyurea

If you’re looking for the best concrete floor coating all around, no option holds a candle to Penntek polyurea floor coatings. These coatings go above and beyond what epoxy and stain have to offer, involving multiple layers of protection and offering a variety of style and color options. The system is broken down into three sections: the basecoat made of Polyurea, a strong synthetic compound, a blend of vinyl chips or flakes for visual flair; and a polyaspartic polyurea topcoat to provide the final protective layer and add sheen. Anderson Painting employs Penntek coatings because they’re reliable, durable, safe, easy to install and maintain, and they look great in any setting (though we do offer additional coating solutions as well). With proper care and maintenance, your Penntek patio coatings can last for multiple decades, and residential projects are backed by a 15-year warranty.
