Interior Residential Painting: Which Room in Your Home Should You Paint First?

An interior painting project can seem overwhelming at first, especially when multiple rooms need a fresh coat. In these cases, you might not know where to begin. There are no hard and fast rules regarding the order of painting the inside of your home. Still, there are some ways to narrow it down and avoid “option paralysis.” Whether you plan on painting the rooms yourself or hiring Raleigh house painters, here are some things to think about when deciding which room to paint first.

Which Room Needs it the Most?

One of the best ways to get started is to go by order of necessity. Which room needs the most attention? The others will still get painted, but why not get the hardest part over with first? In some scenarios, this choice will be readily apparent if a particular room needs drywall repair, or the paint is chipping and peeling, or the color is extremely faded, etc. However, sometimes several rooms need equal amounts of attention. If so, you might have to go by different criteria to decide which room gets painted first.

Paint the Largest Room First

If all the rooms in question require a lot of work, start with the biggest room. This room will require the most work by its very nature. Again, it’s often wise to get the hard work done first, as it will make the rest of the job easier as it goes. Also, painting the largest room first will help give you an idea of the number of supplies you’ll need going forward. If you start by painting a smaller room, you might underestimate how much stuff you need, such as paint, brushes, rollers, tape, etc.

Most homes feature rooms larger and smaller than others. However, the rooms of some homes are all comparable in size. If this is the case, these criteria won’t work so well either. Fortunately, there is another standard by which you can decide the painting order.

Which Room is Used or Seen the Most?

Even if all rooms are about the same size, not all rooms are used or seen at the same frequency. Most homeowners will want their main rooms painted first so they’re ready to be enjoyed. Certain bedrooms, guest rooms, and bathrooms might go unseen for the most part. These rooms can wait. Living rooms, dining rooms, and kitchens, on the other hand, often house the most people. Consider painting these rooms first. Sure, they’ll be out of commission for a little while, but at least they’ll be fresh and free to use while the rest of the interior is being painted, out of the way.
