What You Should Know About Painting Commercial Siding

Commercial siding on a Raleigh, NC business

We might be told from an early age not to judge a book by its cover, and yet, we can’t help but gain an impression of a place based on its exterior appearance. Indeed, the way your business looks from the outside can have a major impact on your success (or lack thereof). If your property (and business) has seen better days, then investing in an exterior update is probably a wise decision. Before you get started, though, here’s what you should know about painting your commercial siding.

What to Know About Commercial Siding

Material Matters

It might seem obvious, but different siding materials require different types of coatings and painting processes to ensure the best results. For instance, vinyl commercial siding (the most common material) should be coated with latex acrylic paint specifically designed for outdoor use. Metal siding (i.e. aluminum or steel) should likewise receive exterior acrylic latex coatings, but with additional flexibility and gloss-retention. Other paint products and add-ons should be used for wood, masonry, fiber-cement, and other types of siding. The key is understanding what your siding is made of and using the proper materials and methods for the job.

Proper Surface Preparation is Essential

Various steps should be taken prior to any commercial siding paint job in order to maximize durability, adherence, and longevity. Power washing your siding, for instance, will effectively blast away dirt, dust, debris, mold, mildew, and more. Additionally, you must inspect every inch of your commercial siding to check for signs of damage. Any and all repairs should then be made to your commercial siding before moving on to the next step: priming. Though priming your siding isn’t always necessary, it’s never a bad idea, as this process will act as an initial protective barrier for your siding and aid in paint adhesion.

Timing Is Key

Even if you want to jump on this project right away, it’s important to take a step back and do some proper planning. Like any other exterior project, a commercial siding paint job is largely contingent on the weather. As such, winter is usually off the table (unless you live in a region that has moderate weather year-round). You’ll also want to keep an eye on the forecast as your project approaches. If a storm is on the horizon, you’ll have to reschedule with your commercial painters. While much of this is out of your control, you can streamline your siding project by aiming for a time of year that usually offers mild weather conditions and temperatures between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Beyond these environmental concerns, you’ll also want to aim for a time of day and year that sees the least amount of interference with your employees, customers, and guests. While a commercial siding paint project isn’t as obstructive as an interior painting overhaul, this project can still get in the way of those who normally use the building and even pose safety hazards. Keep all of these time-sensitive matters in mind when planning your project.

Colors Can Make a Big Difference

Finally, note that color choice is a big deal when painting your commercial siding. For one thing, the color(s) you choose for your property will say something about your brand, so it’s important to choose a palette that reflects your business’ identity. Not only that -- darker paint colors will absorb sunlight (i.e. heat) while lighter colors will reflect more light. This matters because too much heat can warp and damage your siding. As such, you might prioritize lighter, cooler colors for your commercial siding.
